Why can a mirror deteriorate or develop corrosion over time?

A mirror can deteriorate when moisture or cleaning products reach the thin silver layer on the back through the edges. Over time this causes dark spots or black edges. Protecting the edges and cleaning the mirror carefully extends its life considerably.

How much does a custom mirror cost?

The price of a custom mirror depends on the size, the type of mirror, the thickness, the shape and the edge finish. In the GlasBoertje.nl configurator you see straight away what your mirror costs, including VAT.

How large can a custom mirror be?

Via the website you can order a custom mirror from a minimum of 100 x 100 mm to a maximum of 1500 x 3000 mm, or 2000 x 3000 mm with safety film. Larger is often possible via contact, with extra surcharges.

Where can I have a mirror made to size?

At GlasBoertje.nl, you put your mirror together online. We make it to your size and deliver it in the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium). If you would like to see it first, you can do so in our showroom in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Can a 6 mm mirror be used as a kitchen splashback, even behind a gas hob?

A 6 mm mirror can be used as a kitchen splashback, but not behind the gas hob. A mirror is untempered glass and can break from heat. Near a heat source, or where a hot pan can touch the wall, we recommend tempered lacquered glass.

What thickness should I choose for my custom mirror?

For a custom mirror we usually advise 6 mm: sturdy, easy to process and suitable from small to very large sizes. 4 mm can work in certain situations, 3 mm is very thin and 8 mm is usually thicker than needed.

Can I still change my order for custom glass or mirrors?

Only as long as your order is not yet in production. Once you have received the email that your custom glass or mirrors are in production, we can no longer change the order. So check your sizes and choices carefully before you order.

How can I have the edges of my custom mirror finished?

If the edges of your mirror will be visible, always choose polished edges: smooth and free of damage. If the edges sit completely inside a frame or surround, unfinished edges are fine. As an extra, you can have a bevelled edge ground, a sloping edge around the front.

When do I need a mirror with safety film?

We recommend a mirror with safety film wherever someone could fall or bump against the mirror, such as floor-to-ceiling mirrors, mirror walls for sport and dance, shops, fitting rooms and hospitality venues. A bathroom or wall mirror at home does not necessarily need it; you decide that yourself.

When should I choose a coloured mirror?

Choose a coloured mirror as a decorative mirror in your interior, where the reflection does not need to be bright silver. Bronze gives a reflection with a light brown tint, grey a dark reflection. For the bathroom or a full-length mirror, a normal, clear mirror is the better choice.

What do you use a matte mirror for?

You use a matte mirror as a decorative finish in an interior, for example on a wall or as a kitchen splashback. It gives no reflection but a matte look similar to aluminium, so it is not suitable for looking at yourself.

What is the lead time for my custom mirror?

At GlasBoertje.nl, a custom mirror of 3, 4 or 6 mm has a lead time of 7 to 10 working days, also with safety film. An 8 mm safety mirror, a double-sided mirror or a one-way mirror takes 2 to 3 working weeks.

How do I mount a full-length mirror?

On a door or wardrobe door, you stick a 4 mm full-length mirror in place with special mirror tape, close to the edge. On a wall, preferably choose a 6 mm mirror with safety film, mounted with mirror clamps.

How do I mount a mirror wall?

You mount a mirror wall with mirror glue or with mirror profiles. Glue is the easiest, but you cannot remove the mirrors in one piece afterwards. With profiles at the top and bottom you can later remove, move and reuse the mirrors.

How do I prevent condensation on my mirror?

You prevent condensation on your mirror by ventilating the bathroom well. If that is not enough, a mirror heater on the back helps: it keeps the mirror warm, so water vapour does not settle on it and your mirror does not steam up.

What is a double-sided mirror (laminated mirror)?

A double-sided mirror, also called a laminated mirror, consists of two 3 mm mirrors bonded back to back. As a result it reflects on both sides. You use it where you want a reflection on two sides.

What is a mirror with safety film?

A mirror with safety film is a normal mirror with a film on the back. If the mirror breaks or gets damaged, the pieces of glass stay stuck to the film and do not fall down. We recommend 6 mm with film; 4 mm with film is an alternative.

What are coloured mirrors?

A normal mirror is silver: a silver layer on clear glass. With a coloured mirror, the silver layer sits on grey or bronze glass, or the silver layer itself is coloured, such as gold, champagne, rosé or blue. This gives the reflection a tint.

What are matte mirrors?

Matte mirrors are opaque mirrors: they do not show a reflection. The front of the glass is etched, in other words made matte. This gives the mirror a matte look instead of a reflection.

What mirror size should I choose for a mirror wall?

Choose mirrors as wide as you can still move them. A height of 2000 to 2200 mm is usually enough. Online you can order up to 1500 x 3000 mm, or up to 2000 x 3000 mm with safety film. A 6 mm mirror weighs about 15 kg per m2.
