Can a 6 mm mirror be used as a kitchen splashback, even behind a gas hob?
You can use a 6 mm mirror as a kitchen splashback, but not behind the gas hob. A mirror is untempered glass and can break from the heat. Behind a heat source we recommend tempered lacquered glass.
When you need tempered glass
If there is a heat source close to the wall, such as a gas hob within about 10 cm of the glass panel or mirror, or if a hot pan can touch the splashback, we recommend tempered glass. A safety mirror is also a mirror made of untempered glass, with film on the back. Unfortunately, there are no tempered mirrors that are suitable as a kitchen splashback. Behind the hob you therefore end up with tempered lacquered glass.
Which thickness
For a kitchen splashback we always recommend at least 6 mm, tempered or untempered. Not sure what suits your kitchen? Feel free to contact us.
