Why can a mirror deteriorate or develop corrosion over time?

A mirror consists of glass with a mirror coating on the back. This coating contains a thin silver layer which creates the reflective effect. The silver layer is protected by several protective paint layers, but it can still be affected by moisture and certain chemical influences. When this protection is damaged over time, deterioration or so-called mirror corrosion can occur.

 

How does mirror corrosion occur?

The reflective silver layer is located on the back of the glass and protected by a coating layer. If moisture reaches this layer through the edges of the mirror, the silver layer can slowly deteriorate. This often appears as small dark spots that develop from the edge towards the center of the mirror. In many cases this becomes visible as black edges or dark marks along the sides of the mirror.

In addition to moisture, chemical or acidic cleaning products can also damage the mirror coating. If cleaning liquids run along the edges and reach the back of the mirror, this can accelerate the deterioration process.

This process is more likely to occur in areas with higher humidity, such as:

  • bathrooms
  • toilet rooms
  • wellness or spa environments
  • areas where condensation regularly forms

 

How can you prevent mirror corrosion?

Although deterioration can never be completely prevented, a few simple precautions can significantly extend the lifespan of a mirror.

  • Make sure the mirror does not stand directly in water or constant moisture.
  • Allow a small ventilation space behind the mirror during installation.
  • Prevent water or condensation from remaining along the mirror edges for long periods.
  • If the mirror is installed in a humid area, the edges can be protected with a clear metal lacquer or similar protective coating.

 

Cleaning and maintenance of a mirror

Proper cleaning also helps maintain the mirror in good condition.

  • Preferably use a mild glass cleaner.
  • Do not spray cleaning products directly onto the mirror, but onto a cloth first.
  • Prevent cleaning liquids from running along the mirror edges.
  • Always dry the edges after cleaning.

 

Normal wear of a mirror

Mirror corrosion or deterioration usually occurs due to use, moisture and environmental conditions. It is therefore generally considered a form of normal wear of the mirror coating.

By protecting the mirror edges and following the correct cleaning and maintenance guidelines, the deterioration process can often be slowed down considerably and the lifespan of the mirror can be significantly extended.
