Which mirrors are suitable as an interior mirror?
In principle you can use any mirror as an interior mirror. Which one suits best depends on what you use it for and on your taste. A few tips:
- A clear reflection. If you want to see yourself clearly, choose a standard mirror. It is available in 4, 6 and 8 mm thickness, and in 4 and 6 mm also with safety film. That film is on the back and makes sure no dangerous pieces of glass fall down if the mirror breaks or is damaged.
- A mirror that blends into the interior. Bronze or grey coloured mirrors suit this. Bronze gives a brownish tint, grey a grey, dark tint. The silver layer is the same on all mirrors; the colour is in the glass, which is coloured right through. The thicker the glass, the more colour you see: for a light tint choose 4 mm, for more colour 6 mm. Read more about when to choose a coloured mirror.
- A matt look. Matt mirrors are etched and therefore opaque: they give no reflection. The standard matt mirror has a look similar to aluminium, the coloured versions give a tinted effect. You use them, for example, as a kitchen splashback in a spot without a heat source. See what matt mirrors are.
- Tempered mirror glass. Some mirrors are also available tempered, so you can make a mirror door or mirror wall from them. With this type of mirror, SGG Mirastar, there is no silver layer on the back but a durable chrome coating on the front. The product has been successfully tested for class A to the standard EN 1096-2 (coated glass) and to the standard EN 1036 (mirrors and silvered glass for outdoor use), which also makes it suitable for very humid rooms. The mirror is not completely opaque and in certain conditions can serve as a see-through mirror, also called a one-way mirror or spy mirror. SGG Mirastar is available tempered and untempered, in various thicknesses.
