What thickness and composition of laminated glass do I need?
The thickness and composition of laminated glass depend on the situation, accessibility, size, wind load and mounting method. For roof glazing the pitch also counts. For the most common situations in the home you can use the NEN 3569 (the Dutch standard for injury safety of glass) and the explanatory notes on the NEN 3569 (both in Dutch).
Injury safety and falling through
For injury safety you need laminated glass of at least class 2(B)2, for example laminated glass 33.1. If someone could fall through the glass, as with a balustrade, balcony, staircase or void, you need glass that prevents falling through: laminated or tempered laminated glass. The right thickness and composition then follow from a calculation according to the NEN 2608.
How to read a code such as 44.2 is explained under What types of PVB interlayers are there?.
Having it calculated
The website of the Kenniscentrum Glas (the Dutch glass knowledge centre) has a lot of information about the standards. They can also make a calculation of the required thickness and composition.
The standards for safety glass exist for a reason: if you do not follow them, you risk injury. You are always responsible yourself for complying with the standards. What laminated glass is exactly is explained under What is laminated glass?.
