What mirror thickness do I need for the bathroom?
For a bathroom mirror you usually choose 6 mm. Exactly which thickness you need depends on the size and on the way you mount the mirror. With mirror tape on a completely flat wall, 4 mm is enough.
Keep to the basic rule: the larger the mirror, the greater the chance of a distorted reflection, a kind of funhouse mirror effect. So always mount the mirror as flat as possible. The flatter it hangs, the smaller the chance of distortion.
Which thickness for which mounting
- Tiled in or fully glued to a flat surface: for strength the thickness makes little difference, because the back of the mirror is well supported. Against distortion, 6 mm is a lot safer.
- Concealed mounting set: always choose 6 mm. The mirror hangs about 17 mm from the wall and is therefore more vulnerable, so a sturdy mirror is sensible. A mirror with safety film is not possible here: the concealed mounting kit does not adhere to the film for long enough.
- Mirror tape: 4 mm is enough, but only if the wall is completely flat. If it is not, the tape can come loose and the mirror falls down. So judge carefully whether tape is a sensible choice.
- Mirror clips: 4 mm and 6 mm are both possible. Do choose a mirror with safety film.
