What mirror thickness do I need for my interior?
For an interior mirror, 6 mm is almost always a good choice. It is often strong enough and does not easily give a distorted image. Only for an extremely large mirror or a mirror on a door do you choose differently.
The thickness depends on the size and on how you mount the mirror. To avoid a funhouse mirror effect, keep to the basic rule: the larger the mirror, the greater the chance of a distorted reflection. For a large mirror a thicker mirror is therefore safer. Also always mount the mirror as flat as possible: the flatter it hangs, the smaller the chance of distortion.
- 6 mm: the standard for a mirror in the home.
- 8 mm: for an extremely large mirror, although that is not common.
- 4 mm: for a mirror on a door or cupboard door, which you stick on with mirror tape.
Coloured mirrors
If you choose a coloured mirror, for example bronze, grey or green, keep in mind that a thicker mirror is darker. The glass is coloured all the way through, so more glass gives a darker mirror.
How thick a mirror should be in general is explained under which thickness to choose for a custom mirror.
