How is the price of glass and mirrors calculated?
The price of custom glass and mirrors is usually calculated based on the surface area (m²) and any additional processing. Because glass is cut from large sheets and production involves fixed costs, a minimum chargeable surface area per piece often applies. Below we explain how this works.
Base price: price per m²
The basic price is calculated by multiplying the width × height and converting this into square meters (m²).
- Width (mm) ÷ 1000 = meters
- Height (mm) ÷ 1000 = meters
- Surface area = width (m) × height (m)
Example: 600 × 800 mm = 0.6 × 0.8 = 0.48 m²
Additional options that influence the price
Besides the surface area, the price can increase depending on the selected options or processing. For example:
- edge finishing (seamed or polished edges)
- drilled holes or cut-outs
- safety glass options (for example tempered or laminated glass)
- special coatings or finishes
On the product page you will immediately see the price update when selecting additional options or processing.
Minimum chargeable surface area per piece
For many types of glass and mirrors a minimum chargeable surface area per piece applies. This means that if your glass is smaller than the minimum area, the minimum m² will still be charged.
This is common in custom glass production because certain costs remain the same regardless of the size of the piece, such as: cutting loss from large sheets, production setup, handling, and packaging and transport.
Example (for illustration): suppose the minimum chargeable area is 0.50 m² per piece.
- You order 300 × 400 mm → 0.3 × 0.4 = 0.12 m² → you will be charged 0.50 m² (minimum).
- You order 800 × 900 mm → 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72 m² → you will be charged 0.72 m² (actual size).
The minimum applies per piece
The minimum chargeable surface area applies per individual piece, not per order. If you order multiple small pieces, the minimum may apply to each piece separately.
Where can I find the minimum surface area?
The exact minimum chargeable surface area may vary depending on the type of glass or mirror. On the product page and in the configurator this is automatically included in the price calculation.
If you are unsure about the calculation or would like us to check it for you, feel free to contact our customer service. We will gladly help you determine the correct size and price.
In short: your price is based on the calculated m² (or the minimum m² if applicable) plus any selected processing or options.
